Safety isn't a feature we bolted on - it's built into how Rift works. Every public server is human reviewed, content is filtered automatically, and you're always in control of who can reach you.
Rift is operated by ModemINC. We believe people communicate best when they feel safe. We take a layered approach: strong defaults, automated protection, human review, and clear tools that put control in your hands.
You must be at least 14 years old to use Rift. During sign-up we ask for your real first name, last name, and date of birth to verify eligibility - this information is private and is never shown on your public profile. If we discover an account belongs to someone under 14, we remove it.
By default, all servers on Rift are private and invite-only. A server only becomes publicly listed after a person on our team reviews it against our community standards. Private servers' icons and banners aren't even visible to people outside the server unless an invite is created. We can remove any server from the public directory at any time.
Rift runs an obfuscation-resistant content filter that catches hateful slurs and clearly inappropriate content even when people try to disguise it with symbols, spacing, or leetspeak. The same protection applies to usernames, display names, and profile text, so public-facing identity stays clean.
You decide who can interact with you. You can block any user to stop their messages and calls. Server moderators with the right permissions can remove messages and reactions, time members out, and ban repeat offenders.
If your teen uses Rift, we encourage you to review our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service together. Real names and dates of birth are kept private, public servers are vetted, and inappropriate content is filtered by default. If you have a concern about an account, contact us directly.
We only collect what we need to run the service and keep it safe. To learn what we store and why, read our Privacy Policy.
Rift is not an emergency service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services right away.
